Office of Small Business - What we do
The Government's objective is to secure improvement in the economic environment for small business, promoting greater economic and employment growth in this vital sector.
The Office of Small Business is a focal point for the development and consideration of small business policy issues within Government. It is responsible for promoting and maintaining links across the Commonwealth departments and agencies responsible for implementing elements of the Government's plan for small business.
The Office's key objectives are to:
- provide policy advice and support to portfolio Ministers on small business issues.
- build and maintain effective links with small businesses and their representative organisations.
- foster an understanding of the critical factors influencing the growth of small firms and the small business sector generally. For information on Australian government business assistance programmes and services, see the www.ausindustry.gov.au.
The Government's small business plan aims to:
- improve the business environment in which small business operates;
- ensure effective consultation with small business on the issues affecting them;
- reduce the burden of regulation;
- promote a fair trading environment for small business through the effective resolution of trade practices issues;
- identify and overcome instances of market failure of particular relevance to small business; and
- enhance the competitiveness of small business.
Small Business Adviser Training Program
A one-day training program, using the web based Legal Issues G for Small Business as a resource, is available specifically for small business advisers. The program aims to enhance:
- Business advisers' understanding of key legal issues: and
- The quality of information and assistance to small business managers on legal issues.
- Business advisory organisations wishing to conduct their own in-house training will received free training materials including a facilitator's manual, participants' workbook and training aides.
